2025 Movement and Place Award

Winner

Project: Kangaroo Point Bridge
Location: Brisbane
Team: Blight Rayner Architecture & Dissing + Weitling and BESIX Watpac with Brisbane City Council, concept and reference design by Brisbane City Council with Arup and Cox Architecture

The Kangaroo Point Bridge is an inventive addition to Brisbane City Council’s active transport network and sets a new standard for pedestrian and cycle bridges across the Brisbane River.

More than a connection between the CBD and the Kangaroo Point peninsula, it is a crossing ‘experience’ linking a series of urban spaces. The design incorporates historic elements, activated plazas, an elevated dining pavilion and parkland, with the bridge's diagonal crossing affording views of the shorelines on both sides, in contrast to previous bridges which directly cross the river.

Brisbane City Council is commended on their focus on integrating design components to enrich public experience and commitment to sustainable design principles.

This exemplary movement and place outcome is the result of continuous public consultation process managed by Brisbane City Council, in addition to successful collaborative delivery including Blight Rayner and Dissing + Weitling (Denmark), WSP, Aspect Studios, Blaklash, and BESIX Watpac.

Logan City Council has been quietly championing exemplar movement and place outcomes across their local government area for some time now.

This year, council is commended for this ongoing commitment to urban design, with 3 stand out projects that collectively demonstrate the best principals of this award category.

All 3 projects leverage the triple dividend of economic, community and environmental development by engaging in targeted, human-centric placemaking as part of an overall transport scheme. They also bring these principles to the places’ ongoing management and activation, ensuring they will continue to thrive and adapt to changing community needs over the longer term.
