Townsville Youth Foyer
The proposed Townsville Youth Foyer will offer 40 single occupancy, self-contained units where young people can rent a home in a safe and stable environment, while being supported to achieve their education and employment goals.
The foyer will provide accommodation for vulnerable young people aged 16 to 25 years.
These young tenants will be supported to gain essential, practical life skills to help them transition into mainstream accommodation and live independently.
Young people will need to be in employment, education or training to be eligible to live at the youth foyer. They will also pay 25% of their income in rent.
Experienced youth support staff will provide 24/7 on-site assistance for the young tenants and ensure support is available when needed.
On-site management and support
The Townsville Youth Foyer will be managed by Mission Australia in partnership with Mission Australia Housing.
Mission Australia will:
- manage the Townsville Youth Foyer
- provide 24-hour support and supervision to the young tenants living there.
Mission Australia is a not-for-profit organisation with expertise in managing supported housing. It has a long history of achieving positive outcomes for young people throughout Queensland.
Mission Australia Housing will provide property and tenancy management of the foyer.
Following community consultation in 2019, the Queensland Government announced the 40-unit Youth Foyer would be located at the Pimlico TAFE site.
The Youth Foyer will incorporate design ideas from local young people and key stakeholders to ensure it meets the needs of its future tenants and integrates into the community. The site will also provide a high-quality, architecturally designed building that enhances the local streetscape.
The project is expected to start construction in 2022 and be completed in late 2023.
