Unemployed and struggling to make ends meet, Julie’s life turned around after securing an Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander traineeship with the Department of Communities, Housing and Digital Economy.

Julie, 22, is now a Housing Officer at Maryborough Housing Service Centre, helping people find a place to call home.

She says her new role is rewarding and she enjoys dealing with customers.

“Seeing their faces when they're happy – it makes me happy,” Julie says.

Julie can see a long future ahead in her new career path after earning a qualification in community services through the traineeship.

“This role helps me to be more confident with customers, as it's a customer orientated job,” she says.

“It's also helped me get my driver’s licence.”

Julie says she would tell anyone considering applying for the traineeship to give it a go.

“Trying to find a job was hard, but this traineeship has helped me into work,” Julie added.

Our Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander traineeships provide young people with training, mentoring, paid work experience and a Certificate 3 qualification to kick start their careers.

No prior experience or qualifications are required.
