Rudy is a driving force for the Redlands community

Rudy was caring for his wife for 12 years before she moved into a retirement village, which left him searching for a new purpose to spend his days.

He started driving community transport vehicles for STAR Community Services two days a week, and now spends four days helping people in the Redlands community to get out and about.

Whether it’s taking them to medical appointments, or day charters, Rudy loves meeting so many new people.

“I’m meeting people, having a good yarn and going to different places I wouldn’t have thought of going,” Rudy said.

“It could be anywhere – the last one we did was Tamborine Mountain which included going to a nursery for morning tea.

“The group got to look around the nursery and then we went for lunch up on the mountain.

“We then stopped at the Gallery Walk so they could have a look at the shops.

“It gets people out of the house and gives them other people to talk to.”

Rudy loves the fact the job keeps him active and gives him the opportunity to support people to maintain their independence.

“No matter where you go, whether it’s a medical appointment or a charter, you always find something to talk about.”

Rudy has been driving for STAR for six years and is valued for his driving skills.

“All the people on the charter like how I drive and I get a lot of compliments on it. I like being appreciated for my driving,” he said.
