Historic Hanworth House in East Brisbane is described as “more than a place to stay” and for residents like Karen, the accredited residential service lives up to this tagline.
Karen rents a furnished double room and plans to stay for three months while renovations on her new home are completed. Her colleague recommended Hanworth House when she was looking for short-term accommodation close to the city.
“I was looking for a place with a kitchen where I could cook healthy meals. This was cheaper than other places,” Karen said.
“Also, parking was included. That was significant because I didn’t want to leave my car on the street.”
“I feel incredibly safe here. That’s what is wonderful about staying here.”
Accredited residential services, like Hanworth House, provide important accommodation options for people with a range of different housing needs, including some of Queensland’s most vulnerable. Providing accommodation for four or more people, residents may share facilities such as a bathroom or kitchen. Some services also provide residents with food or a personal care service as part of their accommodation agreement.
Hanworth House is an accredited level one residential service. The well-maintained property has 16 bedrooms with a mixture of single and double furnished rooms. There are well appointed shared kitchens and a choice of private or shared bathroom depending on the room you rent.
When not working her day job, Karen spends her spare time sketching and painting water colours. She often meets up with other residents while cooking a meal in the kitchen at the end of the day.
“Soon after I arrived, I dropped a bottle of olive oil when grabbing it from my food storage cupboard in the kitchen. The nicest thing was that everyone came running to see if I was okay. They helped me clean up as well.
“That’s when I knew that this is a really good environment. People here are kind.”
