Before Patrick was referred to the Kawana Hub, he was moving between sleeping rough and paying for a bed in backpacker’s hostel. He wasn’t confident about his future but was glad the staff at the Kawana Hub were there to help
The Kawana Hub provides temporary accommodation for homeless people at the Sunshine Coast Sports Hub to support people during COVID-19, run by specialist homelessness provider IFYS and the Queensland Government
Zak from the Maroochydore Housing Service Centre recalls meeting Patrick for the first time.
“When I met Patrick, he was at rock bottom. He had $30 in his pocket. In six months, he has turned his life around,” Zak said.
Tania from IFYS says that Patrick was referred to the Hub by his mental health worker after a stay in hospital.
“He had no home to go to,” Tania said.
“We provided Patrick with a room of his own, three meals a day and ensured he had ongoing support to improve his mental health.”
IFYS staff introduced Patrick to a board member for the Kawana Sports Hub who offered him a job at a local tavern.
“He was ready to start work because he had completed his Responsible Service of Alcohol and COVID Safe Certificate while living at the Hub. We also ensured he had appropriate work wear,” Tania said.
Zac worked with Patrick to identify his housing needs and found him a two-bedroom public housing property which he now lives in with his brother. He says Patrick has maintained his employment and has been promoted to have more responsibility.
Patrick is extremely grateful for the support he has received at the Hub.
“Zak and the staff at the Hub have been a very big support for me and my brother getting back on track,” said Patrick.
“The Hub is an awesome place for people like me who need assistance and support.”
