John was working at one of Australia’s first digital hospitals when he was inspired to make a career change and pursue a digital career after seeing the benefit digital transformation could have on people.
“I noticed the benefits of enabling people to work more efficiently and effectively through the process of digital transformation and wanted to be a part of this”, said John.
John was working in the hospital’s medical laboratory when he commenced a Bachelor of IT and Communication at the University of Southern Queensland as a mature age student and after completing his degree John felt he needed job experience to secure an ICT job.
“I saw the Queensland Government’s Digital and ICT graduate program advertised on Smart Jobs and felt that it would be a great opportunity to get some real-world experience in ICT delivery” explained John. He secured a position during the 2019 program intake and started his placement as an IT generalist with CITEC—Queensland Government’s internal ICT infrastructure and support provider.
His first placement was on the ICT service desk, where he helped staff with the ICT and digital related enquiries and requests.
“Working on the service desk was a great place to start and I got to connect with a variety of IT disciplines which helped me gain a greater understanding of the digital and ICT roles available”.
“As part of the program we had the opportunity to undertake three-monthly rotations, which enabled me to learn new skills and helped to build my networks in the business and to figure out what areas I was interested in specialising in”.
“I was working on a large ICT project to implement a server and data maintenance platform and that’s when I realised that I’d like to pursue a career as a business analyst or project manager working with people to help them learn and adapt to new technology”.
The graduate program runs for 2 years and provides recent graduates on the job experience, training and confidence to bridge the transition from graduate to digital professional.
John completed the program in 2021 and was successful in obtaining a permanent position as a Computer Systems Officer and is excited about his ICT future.
